Allergies

An allergy is a hypersensitivity. It occurs when your immune system reacts negatively to a particular food, odor, molecule, pet or other. These substances mostly do not upset other people at all; however, for various reasons which we will explain below, they do upset susceptible individuals.

Symptoms for allergies vary. You can feel uncomfortably itchy, have a runny nose, sneeze continuously, swell up, develop a rash and more. In most cases, allergies, while uncomfortable, are not dangerous. However, there are exceptions. Some individuals may get severe reactions leading to hospitalization and even death.

Often, people who are allergic to one substance will find themselves allergic to others as well. Typical causes of negative reactions are the following:

  1. Pollen
  2. Mold
  3. Various foods
  4. Dust mites
  5. Insect stings or bites
  6. Pet shedding
  7. Medication

What makes certain people more susceptible to allergies than others? According to scientists and researchers, both genetics and environment play a role. The immune system is the body’s built in defense system, designed to fight bacteria. When you get an allergic reaction, however, your defense system is responding to a false alarm.

Mood Swings
In the course of a person’s life, he will have various positive and negative experiences. Reacting with happiness or sadness to particular events is usually normal. However, sometimes, for no understandable reason, a person may find his mood swinging erratically – up one minute, down the next. Some people will feel unduly depressed even when there is no reasonable explanation for their depression.

Although it is difficult to pinpoint a precise cause of mood swings or depression, here are some possible explanations:

  1. Major Disorders. If mood swings are exceedingly erratic or depression persists for weeks and months, the individual is likely suffering from a disorder, e.g. Bi-polar Disorder or Manic-Depression. In these cases, a doctor should be seen.

  1. Chemical Imbalance. A person’s brain releases chemicals called neurotransmitters, causing the person to feel happiness, sadness, excitement, fear, anxiety and more. A balanced brain releases the neurotransmitters and then re-absorbs them. In such cases, the individual’s emotions are normal, according to the situation. If there is an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepenephrine, GABA and dopamine, for example), the person’s mood swings will be erratic.

Hormonal Changes. During puberty (usually between the ages of 11 and 14), sex hormones are introduced to the female body. These hormones can have an effect on the individual’s mood, often to a severe degree. Throughout the woman’s life, she is likely to experience mood swings depending on her hormonal levels. Pregnancy, the menstrual cycle and menopause are the most common causes of imbalanced hormonal levels.

Constipation

Under normal circumstances, a person has a bowel movement at least once a day or once in two days. People who are constipated, however, generally have fewer than three bowel movements a week. When they do have a movement, it is usually hard, dry and painful. Because of this imbalance, they tend to feel uncomfortable, bloated and listless. Simple actions are more difficult for them because of the body’s discomfort.

To better understand the concept of constipation, it is helpful to understand how a person’s digestive system operated. When food enters the body, it passes through the colon, or large intestine. As the food moves through the colon, the colon absorbs water and forms waste, or stool. The colon’s muscle contracts, continually pushing the stool toward the rectum. Once it reaches the rectum, the colon has absorbed all or most of the water, and the stool is solid. If the colon has absorbed too much water, the stool is hard and dry, difficult or impossible to pass out of the rectum. At this point, constipation occurs.

Nearly everyone gets constipated once in a while. Diet and lack of exercise are the most common causes. If the constipation is temporary, it is generally not perceived as a problem; however, if the constipation persists and keeps recurring, the individual’s quality of life is negatively affected.

The most common causes of persistent constipation are the following:

  1. Lack of fluids
  2. Lack of fiber in diet
  3. Lack of exercise
  4. Laxative overuse or abuse
  5. Medications
  6. Irritable bowel syndrome
  7. Regularly postponing bowel movement urges
  8. Pregnancy or other hormonal body changes

Indigestion

Indigestion and heartburn are the words we use to refer to pain or irritation in the chest or upper abdomen, specifically a burning feeling in the chest after meals. The medical community uses the term “dyspepsia.”

The most common symptoms of indigestion are the following:

  1. Heartburn
  2. Discomfort or pain the upper abdomen or chest
  3. Lack of appetite
  4. Nausea
  5. Excessive urge to burp or belch; flatulence

The causes of indigestion vary. Depending on the cause, your symptoms may be infrequent and pass quickly or they may be persistent and regular. Normally, your stomach produces a strong acid to aid in the digestion process and to guard against infections. Your stomach, intestines and esophagus are lined with a layer of mucus, which acts as a barrier against the acid. If however, your mucus layer is impaired, the acid irritates the tissue underneath. Heartburn occurs when the valve joining the esophagus and stomach doesn’t work correctly, allowing reflux – or the flowing back up your food tube – of the stomach acid.

If you tend to suffer from indigestion, you should avoid the following:

  1. Eating heavy meals
  2. Smoking
  3. Alcohol
  4. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines
  5. Eating irregular meals (Food neutralizes acid, so long spaces between meals allow the acid more freedom.)

Pregnancy and stress are also common causes of heartburn and indigestion. Occasionally, persistent indigestion may be caused by an ulcer, or even cancer. If you vomit blood, have inexplicable weight loss or severe pain, you should seek advice from a medical professional.

Hyperglycemia / High Blood Sugar

Hyperglycemia is a condition that occurs when an excessive amount of glucose circulates in a person’s blood. It happens when the body does not have enough insulin. or when the body can't use insulin properly.

Hyperglycemia generally affects people with Diabetes. If you have Type 1 Diabetes and you haven’t given yourself enough insulin, you may get hyperglycemia. If you have Type 2 Diabetes, your body may just be ineffective, causing it to not utilize the insulin properly. Making poor food choices, lack of exercise, stress and illnesses can also cause glycemia.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia include excessive thirst, frequent urination, high sugar levels in the urine and high blood glucose.
